Totally missed this thread before somehow. I'll break it down into 2 sections, NorCal ond SoCal.

NorCal:
Stafford Lake County Park in Novato - really awesome course, in my top 3.
DeLaveaga Park in Santa Cruz - 28 holes of DG goodness, one of the top rated courses in the country.
Golden Gate Park DGC in San Francisco - really liked this course, well taken care of, lots of variety, beautiful park.
Ryan Ranch DGC in Monterey - 27 holes, a great course to hit up on the way to Delaveaga or Stafford.
Skyline Wilderness Park in Napa - supposed to be good, but haven't played it.

SoCal:
Coyote Point DGC at Lake Casitas in Ventura - awesome course, one of my favorites.
Sylmar (Veterans Park) in Sylmar - a must play for any socal road trip, it's the first one you'll pass on the way into LA.
La Mirada Regional Park in La Mirada - I think it's 27 holes right now, another good course I haven't played yet.
Chavez Ridge DGC at Elysian Park in LA - an 18 hole course on steep hills that can be really fun.
Oak Grove at Hahamongna Park in Pasadena - first DG course in the world.
Emerald Isle in Oceanside - on a golf course, so you can only play certain hours.
Morley Field in San Diego - supposed to be good, but haven't played it.

Josh's list is good stuff. I've played almost all of them with Josh on road trips and agree with his suggestions. Stafford Lake is one of my favorite courses and is a must play at least once for everyone in California! Nothing else like it!!

Just for some variety: Tahoe has free camping and 5-6 courses that look like they would be worth playing if you want to take a bit more of a drive.
